about the artist Paul Joshua Schneider
Woodturner |Carpenter |Designer
I was fascinated by working with wood from an early age. After leaving school, I completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter. I always liked carpentry, but I soon realized that I was more interested in the design process and making small everyday objects out of wood. During my apprenticeship, I discovered my passion for woodturning. I bought my first small woodturning lathe and began to teach myself the techniques with the help of books and videos. Soon after, I took numerous courses with professional woodturners and am constantly learning new processes and techniques for this craft.
Woodturning is like a meditation for me and I feel a great connection to this craft. The closeness to the workpiece, the sound of a freshly sharpened tool working its way into the wood, the long shavings flying around the workshop - all of this fascinates me immensely.
The design process is a very important part of my work. I look for everyday objects and want to use them to create objects for a more intentional life. I try to combine contemporary art and functionality as best I can. I usually combine simple forms and well thought-out details to give my works character. I take my inspiration from classic elements and give them a minimalist touch. A great source of inspiration for me is the Japanese style. My fascination with wood craftsmanship led me to travel to Japan in 2020. I traveled to this country for over 6 months. Hardly any other style has inspired me so much for my work.
In 2020/2021, I completed further training as a "Designer in the skilled crafts" at the Academy of Design in Munich. As my final project, I created a design for chess pieces and made them on the lathe.
I have been working full-time as a professional woodturner since 2022. Most of my production takes place on my lathe, a Vicmarc VL240.
